All That We Do

The Serteens Year

The George B. Carter Serteens Club of Hawaii year goes from April to April.  Nominations for club officers are held in February, officer elections are held in March and the new officers are installed at our annual Appreciation Banquet in April.

Officer Elections

At the beginning of every year, student officers are elected by the student members to run the club.  The newly elected officers participate in planning meetings during which they decide on the annual theme and lay out the meeting dates, service projects, social events, fundraisers, and camps.  The officers determine their resource requirements and then decide how they will fund their activities.

Serteens Activities

The officers, mainly the Vice President of Sponsorship and the Vice President of Programs plan the service projects, socials, and identify the guest speakers for the monthly meetings.   The Vice President of Leadership Development plans and coordinates the two annual camps – Leadership Camp in July and the Knight’s Motivational Camp in February.  The Vice President of Finance plans and executes the fundraisers and the Appreciation Banquet in April.

General Meetings

Once a month, normally on the fourth Sunday of the month, there is a general meeting from 1:30-3:00 p.m at St. Andrew’s Priory School.  The meeting is divided into two parts – a business portion and a guest speaker portion.  During the business portion, club business is conducted and members are updated on the plans for upcoming events.  During the guest speaker portion, members are able to interact with leading members of our community on a variety of  topics.

Service Projects

Community service projects are planned by the Vice President of Sponsorship.  Past service projects have included: support for the annual State Advisory Council for the Gifted and Talented (SACGT) Conference, The Contemporary Museum’s ARTSPREE, beach cleanup projects at Magic Island and Keehi Lagoon, collecting donations for the Hawaii Food Bank, and cleaning exhibits at the Zoo.  At some projects, socials are conducted afterwards.

Socials and Guest Speakers

The Vice President of Programs plans the club socials and coordinates for the guest speaker for the monthly meetings.  Past club socials have included picnics, karaoke, billiards, mini golf, and bowling.  Past guest speakers have included Senator Colleen Hanabusa, Mayor Mufi Hannemann, and Frank Delima.

Fundraising

The Vice President of Finance is responsible for fundraising activities to raise funds to support the operational budget of the club and to reduce the costs for the camps.  The VP of Finance is also responsible for the Appreciation Banquet held in April.

Leadership Training

The Vice President of Leadership Development is responsible for the planning of the two annual camps.  Leadership Camp is a 3-day camp normally held in July at Camp H.R. Erdman on the North Shore.  The Knights Motivational Camp, the highlight of the year,  is a 5-day camp normally held at Kilauea Military Camp in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park of the Big Island of Hawaii in February.

Throughout the year, Serteens exercise their leadership skills, associate with their peers and serve the community – all while having fun.

Mentorship

Adult advisors, members of the Honolulu Sertoma Club, provide the guidance and mentor the the officers throughout the year.
